we found out about this company called MENA and really loved what they´re doing to help change things on a positive way. they work in palestine basically bringing renewal energy through geothermal resources to the houses in the gaza strip. this conference was held in Bethlehem, by Khaled, the founder of MENA. Attached also you will find some pics of what you will see through you window if you decide to go by a car from jerusalem(Israel) to Bethlehem(Palestine), when appears in front of your eyes the massive wall that the jewish have built to separate palestine from their occupied territories from the west bank. i took those pics on my last trip to israel and was amazed of how things like these were allowed to happen, having people living surrounded by walls taller than the ones of a prison and controlling whats coming in and out of their doors. from what Khaled tells about his firma, and even with all these dificulties, his company MENA, found a way to make things happen. Kahled was born in Gaza but raised and educated in Canada. I hope you enjoy the video as much as we did.

apenas hay tiempo para escribir para descansar se acumulan un montón de cosas por terminar hacerse mayor esto es todo? sin embargo el domingo subimos a la montana a hacer snowboard pasar el día en la naturaleza y la sensación de rapidez, del vértigo combinado con el ejercicio físico, el aire frío sin que se note, las copas de los árboles llenas de nieve en la parte alemana de los alpes. el lanzarse disparada, rápida sobre la tabla, ahhhhhh poder disfrutar tanto de la velocidad espectacular de la bajada. las pistas, divertidas, con estupenda nieve de una tremenda nevada que cayó durante el fin de semana. un domingo maravilloso.

we worked last week with christian for an assigment at the WHO -world health organization-. The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) that acts as a coordinating authority on international public health. The headquarters are in Geneva, in this amazing building with such an amazing arquitecture that i fell instantly and completely in love with . The building was designed by the modernist arquitect Jean Tschumi in 1959 and is just Amazing. I asked Christian to do some extra photos of the spot!Im really into this retro_futurismus_look_buildings with finished surfaces and materials like/beton/concrete/glass/stone/steel/wood/all mixed up shaping beautiful offices spaces with lots of light that still look so modern after so many years. there were tons of amazing arquitects in switzerland during that time.

coming back to germany a great surprise awaits. the newspaper der zeit has decided to give, during a year starting last week, to outstanding swedish photographer lina scheynius, a page to fill up weekly with words and images that will feature her visual diary. we love lina´s work. we love her selfpublished books and we knew for a long time that her quality was completely outstanding. as well we are in love with her diaries. we are very happy that der zeit has taken this direction. congrats to lina and congrats to der zeit.

with doctor june, the day of my birthday a great conversation took spontaneusly place. today is my birthday doctor june, oh, congratulations. happy birthday. nice that you are here for your birthday. yes i love being in asia. everything is so diferent and at the same time your logic has a huge bit of peace that fails completely in our western perspective.
well, you know, i just read this great article on the newspaper yesterday which unfortunately i cant make you read since is in mandarin, but it talks about how life should be seen. we should behave like water, with that consistence. water sometimes can be very brave, like a waterfall, like a rapid and water can also be very peaceful, like a lake, or like a flat ocean with no wind. therefore the consistency of our life should resemble to water, sometimes acting very bravely, sometimes on a calmed way. at the same time, the article mentioned something also important:
on the taking of decisions, we should behave like a mountain. once the decision is taken, we should be as strong and powerful as a mountain in terms of following it.
kuala lumpur was full of water.
on the top of skycrapers, at the pool at my hotel.
but also in my head,
within a second, in my room, a great calmed lake took shape in front of my eyes.
- similar to that placid lake i try to concentrate on while doing my daily meditation exercises-.
was beautiful to see it and capture it with my old beloved camera.
be like water, as doctor june said.
those words entitle centuries of wisdom.
is all about how we see things. this time i can share it.
it certanly was a beautiful b-day present from life.

our talk with chris dercon about books is out in kaleidoscope

i used to work with chris dercon before he moved to london to take the direction of the tate modern and we spend a lot of time together between books, talks about magazines and amazing catalogs in his private archive. so i always thought that i wanted to have a talk with him and give it a published shape about this amazing moment we are living between the paper and digital publication and also the conversation was an attempt to reflect his personal collection and book choices since people is what they read and wanted to portrait chris more from the intellectual perspective than the public persona.
the talk has been published in the fantastic italian magazine kaleidoscope, which is also something very special. i wanted to thank cristina travaglini and giovanni majer from kaleidoscope for their help and also jennifer bailey from tate for their quick response in a holiday timming and paul geddis for his aditional perspective. most of all i wanted to thank chris for his time and amazing energy.

Hallöchen there! we are very excited about this post because it means that our collective exhibition Visual Diaries / Girls will be hittting the south european city of Barcelona at the beggining of december. Which is something that makes us extremely happy because we will be able to enjoy a great getting together with friends that we havent seen in quite a while and that a great party will be expected at the opening in the galería Ras. Opening will be the 9th of december and will stay there until 14th of january of 2012. I wouldnt miss it if i were you since you will be able to see the work of a marvellous selection of young girls photographers from all over the world! BARCELONA HERE WE COME! ;)

p.s. things we learnt in Wien with Visual Diaries
-they love to have events and they wieners have such a great small talk for the openings and events- magnific, light, from here to there, outstanding good, the laughs, the hey meet this one, hey somebody else new comes, all very armonic and not posed or boring or intellectual very amazingly fun and ellaborated but that seems very light and unique -that supposely comes still, from the times of the austrohungarian empire, when the court use to hang out together, for the waltz balls and for the other happenings they used to have back then, and still have now, for one reason or another, there is always something going on.
-you shouldnt-under any circumstances- mix the Weißburgunder wine with red wine. no no no. you will go straight to the toilet to puke.
-Wien is a great city with an amazing cultural life.
-Is one of the best cities in the world to have brunches in old Palaces converted in Museums- probably after Saint Petersburg...-
-The buildings and arquitecture is beautiful. The students live close to the old apartment of Sigmund Freud and their flats are marvellous students palaces with ceilings of 4 meters and art noveau everywhere- i havent seen that anywhere else, sorry, well yes, now that i think about it...maybe in Prague, very close to Wien btw...-
-They are very open minded and nice and lovely and we had a great time there and want to go back as soon as possible.
-Their caffees are also amazing.
-I would move there. No doubt.

some people like to listen to music when they dont feel well, or read a book, or draw, or write, some others like to go for a walk or other options that may work as efficiently. I like to read this book over and over. this book came to my hands almost three years ago and is just magic. it transports you somewhere else, to the 80´s, to a very special artist who was joseph beuys, and it features the work he did for the diferent Documentas of Kassel where he developed several actions that were taken in the art context but where more political and ideological more than anything else.

The first time i remember having a mention to Beuys was when i was 17 and I was living in the north of Germany. The family i was living with took me to a fantastic museum in Dusseldorf where in one of the rooms, i found a bounch of pieces made of solidified wax, feld- fieltro, and blankets. Kennst du Beuys florencia? they asked me when we were walking around the pieces and they told me a story about the artist which sounded like a fairy tale, where during the war, he had had a plane accident where his plane crashed and he was found in the snow by nomads which took his body and covered it with wax and blankets until they brought him back to life. i thought that was a movie or something, but germans dont usually lie, so i believed it. then i started to find a bit more about him. I still dont think the story was true, but, i really liked the idea of how a visual idea could inspirate such a body of work.

many years later this book came into my head and hands and had information about all the actions that he had prepared for the documenta of kassel in detail. and it felt like taking dosis of something so powerful that calmed me down because it enhaced a beauty that i couldnt really explain but that did me a lot of good. The Documenta is a big art event of Germany, it takes over the city of kassel and beuys in the documenta of 1982 decided that his action was going to plant 7000 oak trees around the city of Kassel. and he invited the citizens to enjoy him in the act, to help out, found private finance to help out to cover the cost of the action and as a good politic and artist developed a campaign with advertising around the city with the action.

if you participated in the action planting an oak tree, you would also get a tree certificate for being part of the action by the free international university, an institution also created by beuys- who was also an professor- during the previous documentas where debates had been taken place about so many diferent topics. Like an open university or a debate space which was called Die Internationale Hochschule für Kreativität und Interdisziplinäre Forschung.

im very happy because next week is an opening at the thomas modern gallery of münchen with his work and there will probably be many pieces i havent seen yet in person. next thursday, in münchen.
the book about his documenta arbeit is still marvellous. it has a power that doesnt expire. he was great. the more you dig into his work, the more you realize its pureness. it does a lot of good. it pregnates your kopf and herz and geist.

i love old things, old publications, clean design, basic elements, this elegance that sustains simple books like photographic essays of german zoos from the 1920´s. But i feel happier when i see that magazines that somehow i feel are doing something nice, and beautiful, have LITERALLY taken -more or less- the creative direction of the beginning of the last century. finding jewels like this blaue buch in antique book shops in münchen is lots of fun. german book design+ visual aesthetics use to be something absolutely fantastic.

Really great staff, cocktails and nice people. Can go there after work, meet up some friends, have a spritz outside or on sundays, with these sundowner sessions with music and djs. Top favorite. Bravo Bravo für Klaus and his crew.

while studying journalism (which is something i did) you must read this communication´s theorist called McLuhan and his books. Specially famous is his "The Medium Is The Message". It was a pity that the teachers never suggested to check the available video material of his thoughts recorded - with this irresistible 60´s b&w TV´s look that make the message even cooler now-. McLuhan was a professor and theorist and i bet that his classes were lots of fun.

never mind if you are a journalist or not, if you use Internet and therefore you are reading this, you may completely agree with his way of thinking. His perspective over the end of the printed media -as it was understood before the appearance of the TV and radio- and his predictions about the future completely match the how we conceive the world now. Cool canadian cat this McLuhan - with also a great style!

hi there, last weekend i played my first tennis tournament in munich. we had so much fun. and lets put it this way, there is not a better way to spend a whole saturday than playing tennis with diferent people at the club. thats how i grew up and thats probably something that will never change.

Me ha llevado un tiempo llegar a estos documentos. Son un montón de entrevistas y retratos que hice hace un tiempo. Muchas de esas personas, con el tiempo han llegado a ser muy popular, y es divertido ver como algunos cambian y otros no. Esta corta entrevista es el primera de la serie "Desde el archivo", ahora que todo gira en torno al archivo. Fueron, en su momento, publicadas online en un sitio en el que trabajaba entonces. Las vuelvo a publicar porque me da la gana y porque estoy poniendo orden en todo el trabajo de todos estos anos.
Y porque me encanta leer entrevistas. He elegido que la primera sea Àngela Vallvey porque su "Los estados carenciales" se encuentra en la biblioteca pública de Munich como ejemplo de libro en castellano para todos los alemanes que quieren aprender espanol o para todos los que extranan leer en castellano que sería mi caso.

Ángela Vallvey es la ganadora del premio Nadal. Con su novela Los estados carenciales ha sido la última galardonada con uno de los premios más prestigiosos del panorama literario. Con una prosa directa y aderezada de sarcasmo, Vallvey se hace dueña del Nadal con una sátira sobre los libros de autoayuda.

¿Qué tal sienta el ajetreo que supone la promoción del premio Nadal?

-Fenomenal : ¡no me puedo quejar!. Procuro disfrutarlo lo máximo posible porque es algo que va en beneficio de a lo que me dedico.¡Estoy contenta por mí!

¿Por qué escribir sobre la felicidad?

-Es el tema por excelencia. Esa búsqueda de la dicha es ancestral pero como tema de interés, se mantiene intemporal . Cuando empecé a escribir la novela necesitaba reflexionar sobre ella.

La idea de la novela surge después de descubrir los libros de autoayuda.

-Hace cinco años descubrí un libro de autoayuda que se llamaba Como desarrollar su capacidad intelectual y me pareció genial porque enseñaba a ejercitar la memoria. Fue mi primera incursión en este tipo de libros que empecé a investigar. Con el timpo pensé que sería bueno escribir una novela de autoayuda cuyo argumento tratara el tema de la búsqueda de la felicidad.

La novela transcurre en Madrid ¿Puede ser un rasgo de nostalgia evocar la capital después de que lleves años viviendo en Suiza?

-Puede ser pero creo que Madrid es una ciudad muy propia para vivir odiseas. Madrid me encanta y a la vez la detesto, es muy dura como lugar de residencia. Debo estar lejos de ella para parcelar mi cabeza con los espacios urbanos propios que adoro pero sin necesidad de vivir los infiernos que también esconde.

Te declaras ferviente admiradora de los filósofos griegos clásicos ¿Se puede aplicar lo que predicaban entonces a la actualidad de forma eficiente?

-Por supuesto. Los griegos eran tíos listísimos que tuvieron más tiempo que nadie para pensar. Hay que apropiarse de esa filosofía porque es perfectamente aplicable a nuestra época.

Con Los estados carenciales planteas que hay falta de algo en la sociedad actual. ¿Cuál sería la principal carencia de la nuestra?

-Más que carencias nos sobran elementos como la codicia y en nuestro país en concreto, la envidia.

Eres poetisa antes que novelista. ¿Qué te resulta más sencillo de escribir, prosa o poesía?

-Lo que hago en narrativa no tiene nada que ver con lo que hago en poesía. Quiero mantener esa esquizofrenia para escribir ambas sin mezclarlas aunque sea difícil.

Más que difícil parece una tarea imposible..

-Yo cambio el chip, procuro hacer el cambio mental de pensar como un novelista cuando escribo novela y no como un poeta que escribe prosa. Hay gente que niega que sea posible, pero yo creo que la clave está en mantener el justo equilibrio en cada género y ceñirse a él. Si se contaminan los ámbitos, seré una mala novelista y una mala poeta.

i love it, i love this mag, i love the fact that finally is possible to find a nice vision of the arabian world. i love the middle east, its exotism, its beautiful arquitecture and delicate taste and everything of how i feel while i am there (another great mag is bidoun which also shares this vision but is more focused in the arts-. from brownbook all i can say is that each issue brings a delightful reading.

this is a post which oozes a serious melancholie: i want to feel the summer as a proper summer ! which is something that doesnt really happen in munich unfortunately. on the other hand i really like what the jörg brockmann photo gallery from geneve- switzerland- is doing with their editions and shows, and felt instantly in love with this limited edition serie and catalog that they have done with michel sedan.

ive always loved small clubs and red is also a great colour which creates great atmospheres for concerts, for the public and performers, it has this something sexy. a few days ago i went to this club called the rational theater, which is actually really close to home; one of this places you cant really see from the outside that is a club. i deeply love to find unexpectedly these secret spots that still exist in the city filled up of this -cool-70´s-münchener-flair, related to the period when "monaco di baviera" -as they call it italy-, was a jet set spot, full of rockstars and great music everywhere. jimmy hendrix presented here his magnific Are you experienced. i bet it was a magical nite.

Jonas Kecskemethy-Vass & Josephine de la Baume, Paris

we were in paris, it was december, my birthday. we spent such an amazing time with josephine and her brother alexandre, with lots of cinema and music at their home full of beautiful african masks and fabulous piano at the entrance hall. one of those nites, once we were back to the apartment where jonas was living close to the bourse after a long walk around Tuileries and Place Vendome and some quick stop for coffee to avoid the cold december in paris, josephine was lying quietly in the sofa and jonas took a guitar that was lying around to play one of his songs and started to sing. it was a beautiful private concert for just two girls who really enjoyed it.

a few years later i find myself in münchen listening at home over and over this track called "fool" from jo ke , the musical project of jonas . The song will be out on white label, a nice record label from berlin this month. this song had to be shown with these images, it couldnt be any other way. would also love to meet again josephine and jonas, together and have a nice remix of those beautiful abends in paris. maybe this time paris will be switch for berlin or new york. is all the same, is only the context what changes.

chris dercon at his private archive: "the aim at the tate is to focus on the analysis"

hi there, last week i met chris, this marvelous person who used to be my boss at haus der kunst and that now is the new director of the tate modern in london. we have worked together in this space, his private archive, an amazing space filled up with shelves and shelves and corridors filled up with books: a whole life dedicated to art and books and magazines and essays and theorie and magazines and slides and videos and publications and everything related to a tremendous intellectual search. i've learnt more here, through all these books and talks with him, than in any other context related to art history i could ever imagine. right before he left to london we got together to talk, as we used to do with a cup of coffee and sometimes sushi.
on this last talk, before his archive moves with him to the tate, i asked him to show me a ranking on his top books of his archive and to define the why of the selected books. im just on the rough edition and i still have to write it totally and give it a shape, but as always, i came back home with my head filled up of with a sort of firework/ping-pong-thinking-data to give a shape to, and a bit of time to reflect and connect all the dots. chris has the most amazing memory ever.
data, data, books, and data. cool. i feel taking with him as if i was doing, as a kid, one of this games you´ve got in some drawing books where once you unite the dots through numbers, you get a figure.
derrida, matteo ricci, walther benjamin, google, the economist, alberto manguel, harold szeeman, deleuze, groys, witte de whit cahiers, herman dahled, hans ulrich obrist, thomas hirschorn, etc

what about the future?
well, some of the things that he will be looking for during his new era at tate will be based on getting for the tate a specific space to focus on the analysis, -forget the white cold cube concept-. is so passé, so totally 90´s.
we need to think and analyze all these changes we are now living and museums shall be a place to speak up loud, debate and confront ideas. Analysis-thinking-active space of debate.
it sort of sounded like, -from an intellectual perspective-, as if his main ambition was something sort of like creating a new agora over one of the sides of the thamesis river in london. how cool is that? --- having him on board also means having the best contemporary art exhibitions of the world. plus his amazing networkconnection, which is indeed, part of the package that comes with chris dercon to london.Im just delighted with the choice of mr. nick serota and his uk crew.
chris is amazing and is somebody who will be truly missed in münchen,

hi there, im working getting all the pieces together for this exhibition that is happenning the 6th of may in munich. visual diaries/girls is a project based in a personal search i have in young women photographers who show her visual diaries through blogs and personal websites from all over the world. the exhibition will start in munich in may, at the gallerie stephanie bender and will feature the work of some of my contemporary favorite photographers like harley weir, madi ju, skye parrott, nuria rius, helen korpak, agnes thor, sophie van der perre, sara gomes, olga perevalova, manuela de laborde and myself and im am really happy about it. im also working in the publication of a book that will be ready for the exhibition opening with moser verlag. beautiful stuff on it, this is something that has been in my head for so long that now, apart from the waking up at 6 everyday to get all the pieces together and not being able almost to live for any other thing that this exhibition and book is something that makes me extremelly happy.
how do we, young women who use photography as a visual diary see is something that somehow now, and thanks to internet is developing a brand new visual lenguage, subtle, delicate, strong and pure. all together and so special that i love to get involved with all these talented photographers from all over the world, and hope that this idea will develop by itself, as it has done from the very beginning.

we are doing an exhibition with the gallerist stephanie bender in münich, in the coming weeks. bella und lázsló will probably also do in the future something related with the arts, im pretty sure. while we were tiding up details of the show, they were sleeping peacefully. they are gonna grow with it. more news to come!

Kilian is a 23 year old skater from Madrid. He skates with a sense of rythm that looks more like dancing -flamenco- than skating. Fucking amazing. BEautiful!

this is a shooting we did for vice magazine in brooklyn. we just got the paper issue of it last weekend. the initial idea was to have people sneaking in an art gallery and build up a sort of nice dan flavin installation-homenage and mix it with vice. this is how it looked on paper, -sorry the funny scanner fuck up-. online can you watch it on vicestyle here. for the next fashion editorial with them well have to do it in madrid, at my parents country house. we had a nice idea+it will be fun. credits of this one right at the end.

feedmee is a studio/agency from köln which do this great stuff with film and animation. maybe i just like their name "feedmeee", sort of this shout...feeeeddd meee seymour!...exactly what the carnivorous plant used to shout to the actor who was the clumsy Seymour at the "Little horror shop" film directed by roger corman-. great film by the way. maybe i just like this agency for their name. dunno.

Have you ever seen patti smith in a concert? well, if you havent i
would suggest you to do it whenever you have the chance to do it.
reading poetry, singing, talking to the audience, es ist egal,
this lady is pure.
this book was published last year,
a nice compilation of her memoires about her teen years, the early 20´s,
her relation with new york, and her long time partner and friend
robert mapplethorpe and their mutual relationship with creativity.
"just kids" is a beautiful story filled up with pages with great
photography and poetry from both, smith and mapplethorpe,
written withouth walls between the reader and the writer;
a beautiful farewell.

its getting hot in here... this book came to my hands and i felt instantly in love with it. ed templeton is one of my early loves on contemporary photography. he is amazing. i love how he writes on his own photos, this mix of written and image, this visual diary need taken to the fully explanation of the moment, of the how, the when. i love how he displays his pieces in his exhibitions and he is just a talented talented talented artist. this "golden age of neglect" was an exhibition at the palais de tokio in paris a few years ago. this is the catalog that stays and make people happy in despite of the temporary access to the hung pics. and thats exactly why we love books like this one.

we like collages. we like hannah höch and paulina olowska and sean mackaoui and all those artists from the dada movement and the bauhaus who used to play with it everyday. if you love collage as much as we do you probably have noticed how often you see now collages everywhere -magazines illustrations, exhibitions, advertising-. this revival has been already checked out carefully at the new book "cutting edges" published by gestalten, the great berliner+editorial+creativehub+visual+culture+compillators. coole sache.
